MSHA

In 2016, Derrick Miles (MSHA Class 34) had an idea about creating a group that could help increase the diversity of healthcare leadership.  During ACHE Congress, an initial planning meeting of the new UAB “Blazers and Suits” Group was held.  This new group, UAB Blazers and Suits, includes MSHA alumni from and students from underrepresented groups and will focus on these 3 areas:

1. SUPPORTING MSHA/EMSHA ALUMNI

  • Mentorship and sponsorship (and knowing the difference)

  • Sharing contact information from this group and other alumni of from underrepresented groups from the program

  • More engagement by UAB alumni in organizations focusing on individuals from underrepresented groups (NAHSE, NAHLE, LGBTQ organizations, etc.)

  • Research/reporting to “tell the story” of what alumni from underrepresented groups are doing now

  • Provide a platform for staying connected.

  • We discussed the idea of an every-quarter gathering for individuals in different areas to get together in person or remotely to discuss issues.  This will also provide networking opportunities.

2. SUPPORTING STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS DURING THE PROGRAM

  • Provide opportunities to get alumni mentors

  • Give students the chance to do internships in organizations seeking to diversify

  • Put mentorship foundation into MSHA curriculum.

  • Put Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) concepts into MSHA curriculum

  • Help UAB advocate for organizations to become more culturally sensitive.

3. RECRUITING OUTSTANDING STUDENTS FOR THE PROGRAM

  • Active engagement with UAB Health Equity Academy

  • Reaching out to high school students interested in healthcare fields would help expand their knowledge of other healthcare opportunities.

  • Develop a Resource List that could be distributed to inform current students (and alumni) of what everyone is doing.

  • More HBCU involvement in regards to undergrad health administration programs.  Include MSHA/EMSHA alumni who attended HBCUs to help recruit at their alma mater.
